Medical Transcription Editor

The Medical Transcription Editor program prepares participants to play a key role in the accuracy of medical records through two roles: 
  • Medical transcriptionists who type (or transcribe) the dictations of doctor-patient interactions, creating the reports that are included in patients' medical records. 
  • Medical transcription editors who are specialized medical transcriptionists focused on editing the written reports generated by speech recognition software.

Individuals who aspire to work in the healthcare industry but prefer to not be in frontline situations or who desire a predictable daily schedule. 

Twelve-month program, self-paced, fully online.

Medical Transcription Editor – prepares participants to become specialized medical transcription editors assisting healthcare workers to transcribe human dictation or to edit speech recognition software generated reports. 

$3,599 includes the cost of online learning materials and certification exams. 

Eligible participants must: 
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent 
  • Be very proficient in grammar and understanding English 
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office 
  • Ability to type a minimum of  60 words/minute 
  • Some medical terminology and punctuation knowledge.
  • Be highly detailed-oriented with great attention to detail and listening skills 

To be successful in the Medical Scribe program, participants must be able to meet the following sensory and physical standards:

Ability to use senses 
  • Visual acuity to identify, read, and understand directions in English on equipment and other documents required in care such as laboratory procedures and administering medications, sharps, or equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish distance, colors, objects, and persons 
  • Ability to hear sounds and warning signals in training facility, which could lead to an emergency situation requiring some type of proactive or reactive response
  • Ability to detect and tolerate smells that may unpleasant or indicate a possible danger 
Physical ability 
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk continually
  • Ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch frequently 
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds 
  • Close vision required to see computer monitor, read documents, and operate copy and fax machine 
  • Work environment is indoors and climate controlled. Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions
