Emergency Medical Technician

Overview

The two-quarter Emergency Medical Technician program provides an introduction to Emergency Medical Care. Modules of training will include: medical/legal terminology, roles and responsibilities of an EMT, documentation and communication, anatomy and physiology of the human body systems, lifting and moving techniques, basic and advanced airway management, medical and trauma patient assessments, emergencies and treatments, use of assisted medications and IV maintenance, bleeding control and shock, use of immobilization devices, obstetrical/childbirth and pediatric emergencies, ambulance operations, hazardous materials, mass casualty and triage. This program consists of two-quarters covering a minimum of 200 didactic hours, 120 hours of lab, and 72 clinical/field hours and 5 patient contacts.

Both EMT I and EMT II must be completed in subsequent quarters for students to be eligible for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians examination.

Students will attend one day of lab each week. The preferred lab day will be considered but does not guarantee placement into the requested day; students are recommended to keep availability for both days prior to placement. Lab assignments will occur after registration, during the EMS orientation event.

Students who are unable to complete EMT I (EMSP 1100, 1101, and 1102) and EMT II (EMSP 1106, 1107, and 1108) in subsequent quarters may be permitted re-entry into EMT II at a later date, depending on class availability. Additional fees may also incur while changing cohorts.
