Human Services
Overview
The Human Services program at MCC prepares students for entry-level positions in public and private community agencies and institutions involved with helping others in need.
The program prepares students to work with homeless populations, in rehabilitation and treatment facilities, family and children organizations and mental health agencies.
Students in this program may also learn how to help those with alcohol and/or drug addiiction.

JOB & SALARY OUTLOOK
Licensed Mental Health Practitioners PLADC Dual Certification
The state of Nebraska is encouraging the Licensed Mental Health Practitioners (LMHP) to seek dual certification as substance abuse counselors by taking HMSV 1140, HMSV 1160 and HMSV 2130.
Students who wish to enroll in the following three courses to obtain dual certification must provide proof of a master's degree in counseling or a related field and/or their LMHP number verified by the state to have the course prerequisites waived.
- HMSV 1140 Assessment, Case Planning and Management
- HMSV 1160 Medical/Social Aspects of Addictions
- HMSV 2130 Treatment Issues in Chemical Dependency

Student Learning Outcomes In The Human Services Program

Enrollment Trends
Enrollment Trends Over The Last Five Years
The following are enrollment trends from the academic year of 2019-2020 through 2023-2024. In 2019-2020, the unduplicated headcount in the Human Services area was 466. This includes students in the General Human Services program, Alcohol and Drug Counseling program, and the Transfer Degree program. This was down 3.3 percent from the previous year. Student credit hours totaled 5637.50. In 2020-21, the annual unduplicated headcount was 428, which was down by 8.2 percent from the previous year. The student credit hours totaled 5284.50. In 2021-2022, the unduplicated headcount was 409, which was down 4.4 percent from the previous year. The student credit hours totaled 4448.00. In 2022-2023, the annual unduplicated headcount was 379, which was down 7.3 percent from the previous year. The student credit hours totaled 4253.00. In 2022-2023 the headcount was 370, which was down 2.4 percent from the previous year. The student credit hours totaled 4471.50.
Retention In The General Human Services Program
In the fall of 2023, 50 percent of enrolled students earned 6+ credits in the first term. In the fall of 2024, this percentage was 53 percent. Twenty percent earned 12+ credits in fall 2023, and 22 percent in fall 2024. In 2023, 41 percent earned 18+ credits in their first year as compared to 44 percent in 2024. In 2023, 19 percent earned 33+ credits in their first year as compared to 21 percent in 2024. In 2023, 5 percent earned 50+ credits in their first year as compared to 3 percent in 2024. Fall-to-winter term persistence was 61 percent in 2023 and 66 percent in 2024. Average current cumulative GPA was 2.34 in 2023 and 2.43 in 2024.
Completion And Placement Data
For all students in the Human Services area, which consists of the General Human Services program, Alcohol and Drug Counseling program, and Transfer Degree program, the following numbers include number of graduates earning an associate degree or certificate. In the academic year of 2021-2022, 42 students earned an associate degree and 4 earned a certificate. In 2022-2023, 40 students earned an associate degree and 9 a certificate. In 2023-2024, 44 students earned a degree and 11 students earned a certificate. After graduation in 2021-2022, 10 students found a job in their field. In 2022-2023, 10 found a job. In 2023-2024, 12 found a job placement. It should be noted that the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not include students finding employment in the Alcohol and Drug Counseling area.
